A Construction Craft Laborer is a person who would typically be called on to perform tasks such as:
                 Site preparation and Maintenance
Carrying by hand, and stockpiling of scaffolding, and work platforms
Grading and compaction of soils and finished grade, by hand and/or machine
Layout and staking protocols
Rigging of heavy loads & hand signaling to an operator
Site preparation and clean up.
                Tools, Equipment, and Materials
Proper use and maintenance of hand, electric, gas, pneumatic, and power tools and equipment, such as hammers, shovels, rakes, concrete breakers, concrete vibrators, etc.
                 Safety
Working in a confined space, tunnel, mine shaft, ditch, dike, manhole, etc.
Flagging, signing, and traffic control on highway and city streets.
Working with heights, scaffolding, swing stage
Hazard material recognition
Trenching and site excavation safety
Working in compliance with State and Federal regulations
              Heavy/Highway Construction
Asphalt, raking, and finishing
Pipe Laying for work traditionally performed by Construction Craft Laborers
Drilling and Blasting
Tunnel and Shaft

Concrete placement using rake or shovel, demolition using 90 lb concrete breakers etc.
Landscaping using hand and motorized tools, hauling and carrying

Pipe laying - Digging, grading of dirt, frequent climbing in and out of trenches, long hours

To be eligible to participate in the apprenticeship program, applicants must:  be at least 18 years of age with birth certificate, possess a valid driver’s license, be physically able to perform the duties of the craft, pass a physical exam and a drug test, and possess a high school diploma/GED or pass a test administered by the West Virginia Job Service Office.

If you are a member or signatory contractor and wish to sign up for training, please contact our office at (304) 489-9665.  You will be required to provide the following information:  name, phone number, laborers local number, or necessary contractor information.    

Training is free of charge to all LIUNA Members, who are in good standing with the locals we serve in WV, VA, NC, and MD.

 Yes, at our facility we have dorm facilities for participants who are attending training.  If you are in need of a dorm room while attending training, please notify the office when signing up for a course to ensure availability.

 Meals are provided to all participants who are attending training.  

 While attending training participants should dress as they would when working on a construction jobsite.  Work boots and trousers are required along with a shirt that includes at least 4-inch sleeves.  If you have a PPE you prefer, you will be permitted to wear these if they are in appropriate condition and do not include divisive or offensive language.

 Participants should pack suitable work clothes as listed in previous FAQs questions.  In addition to these clothes, appropriate clothing is required in all areas of the dorm building.  Bedding is provided along with towels/washcloths.  Participants should bring their own toiletries.

 In the dorms there is a game room which includes pool and foosball tables, gaming systems along with lounge areas with TVs.  Also available is a ½ basketball court with cornhole boards, ping pong table, and free weights. A stocked workout room is also available. Outdoor activities available include a 9-hole putt-putt golf course, a fishing pond, and hiking paths.

 Located in the basketball area there is a washer and dryer available for use.

 Yes, there is an awards program that is based on a points system.  Awards include hats, shirts, coats, boot vouchers, coffee mugs, and beanie hats, to name a few.  These awards change from time to time and sizes and colors may be limited.

 Yes, the training center is equipped with facilities to do most hands-on training indoors, if required.

 Most courses available start at 8:00am and run until 4:30pm Monday through Friday.  Refresher courses are offered on the second Saturday of each month except for June, July, & August.  Please see the clickable link below for our current training schedule. https://wvccl.org/courses/courses/2

 Local 379 covers the Morgantown, WV area.  Local 984 covers the Clarksburg, WV area.  Local 1085 covers the Parkersburg, WV area.  Local 1149 covers the Wheeling, WV area.  Local 1353 covers the Charleston, WV area.   Local 616 covers the Cumberland, MD area. Local 980 covers most of the VA and all of NC.
